"Offering Comfort and Counseling Through Christ"

What is Compass Christian Counseling?
By Dr. Bev

There are many books and articles that have been written about the tension between psychology and theology. I shall not endeavor to explain from a theoretical perspective but more from an experiential perspective.

Experiential meaning what can you expect to experience when you come to a Christian counselor. More specifically, when you come to Compass Christian Counseling. All of our counselors have a personal relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Some may refer to this experience as becoming born again or receiving Christ as Lord and Savior. But there was a definite time when each of us, many years ago, turned the central control of our lives over to God our Heavenly Father.

Life has not been easy for any one of us as our individual stories each hold chapters of pain and loss, various forms of abuse and relational disappointments. I would like to believe that as each of us has sought professional help with these chapters of our lives, we have become more equipped to move into the lives of others. Others may include family, friends and now our precious clients. God has called and equipped us to become ready to assist those that choose to come to Compass Christian Counseling at North Point Church through life experiences, through training and educational opportunities.

You have had opportunity to read the biography of each counselor. You may already know some of us, as we have all been a part of this North East corner of Illinois communities for many years. You have a choice to come for a counseling experience that will touch the spiritual part of your lives. Therein lies the one difference between just any counseling center and Compass Christian Counseling. God is still at work in each of our lives and we are committed to assist you in understanding His good work in your life too.

North Point Community Church saw the potential need for reaching out to the community with a little more in-depth approach to the healing process for some of the wounds of living in a fallen world. None of us can live in this world without having been hurt by someone or some event. God designed us in such a way that the healing process would always come in the context of relationship. This may come with a trusted family member or friend. It may come in the context of a small group or pastoral/professional relationship. But it will come when we become courageous enough to share the closed, dark places of our life’s stories with another.

The sad truth is that many times the very ones that we wanted to trust with our most painful experiences became a part of the wounded stories. There are times when the only one we can trust initially is a professional who is by oath committed to confidentiality with our story. We, as Christian counselors desire to assist you in that process. The good news is that once those dark places have been opened to another, they no longer have the power to define us. Yes, define our value and our worth. For if we believe that we are worthless because of experiences in the past we will never come to a point of loving well. Loving myself or another is rooted in the firm understanding of how much I am loved by God and how much He desires to help me understand the meaning of life’s experiences. I will continue with articles that will help in understanding the Christian Counseling experience. Y’all come back soon…
